If it has more than three chords, it's jazz.

Well I don't know that I agree with Lou, but at least he's always got something to say.

Played a couple of songs from the CD "Walk On The Wild Side: The Best of Lou Reed" and asked if any of the students knew who it was. I was somewhat heartened by the fact that one student yelled out The Velvet Underground. While not 100% correct I did give him part marks! I was however somewhat dismayed that no one actually knew it was Lou.

Yes, the kids today are sad. I guess it's just us getting older to some extent. But, I really think that the shit most kids get inundated with today is watering down their music knowledge. It should actually do the opposite for true hip-hop fans though. A good DJ (such as RZA, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist and countless others) has an enormous appreciation, love and knowledge of all types of music, new and old. Unfortunately, this seems lost on most idiot kids listening. They're all just "in the moment" and think "hey, that's a wicked sample". They don't bother finding out where the sample came from. This is not the DJs fault. It's the fault of the listener.

Anyways, I think it's sad that if you put on anything in your class from earlier than late Nirvana most of the fools won't get it. Gone are the days when there were only a relatively few artists getting their music out there for all to hear. This is good in the sense that now we can hear almost anything on the radio or internet. But, that can also be negative when you get acts with little or no talent being "produced" on a massive scale. Acts such as Ny-O, Ciara, Chris Brown, James Blunt. The list could go on and on.

I still think maybe all acts should only be allowed to do covers of Queens of the Stone Age music.
